Citizen’s
Bank
Citizens Info Icon
Citizens Bank customers can deposit checks using the new Citizens’ mobile application.
Problem: Customers became frustrated when their check deposits were rejected. They would receive an error code without a solution on how to resolve it every time their amount exceeded limitations.
Goal: Alleviate frustration for mobile app users by adding an information icon and briefly explaining the limitations of depositing checks.
Solution: Initially, the copy was one lump paragraph, which seemed overwhelming and busy to read. To simplify the text and adhere to the brand’s voice and tone, I suggested the following:
Updated, concise copy to reduce redundancy
Bolded text to call out both limitations
Separated text into three sections to make it less overwhelming (bullets were not an option)
Goal: When the customer enters an amount beyond the limitations, a quick response appears explaining why the deposit was rejected.
Solution: To replace the red error code, I added a direct yet casual response to Citizens’ tone and voice.
Citizens Deposit Error
Citizens Website Banner
Designers developed a new banner for the Home and Account Summary pages to entice customers to download the new Citizen’s mobile application for managing their accounts.
Needs: The banner needed a short copy from scratch that fit the character limitations and urged legacy app users to switch to the new mobile app.
Solution: The term “level-up” indicated that the new app had more capabilities than the legacy app. The second sentence quickly expanded on some capabilities, such as 24/7 access to products.
Citizens Errors
Good error messaging in UX helps users recover quickly by clearly explaining what went wrong and how to fix it. On mobile and web, it reduces frustration, prevents drop-offs, and builds trust in the product’s reliability.
Goal: To create consistency across the app, I wrote canned responses to common error messages. Also, Designers could use the feedback template to help with their design process, eliminating the need to recreate the wheel.
